Upgrade flex and try again. Thanks to those who answered my question. I upgraded to flex-2.5.2 and I'm happily using Postgres95 now. But I have to apologize to everyone reading this list for asking the question in the first place. The answer was right at the bottom of the INSTALL-file which I should have read to the end...
