Call me dense, but I can't find any information about how to find the
difference between two dates (or between a date and now).  I tried
simple subtraction (D.date - '08/19/1996', epoch - D.date) but they
don't work.

AltaVista and Yahoo were no help, so any assistance would be
gratefully received (especially since my Elmasri+Navath is 8 miles
away from my desk... :-)
