Hi Kurt,
I guess you are using the type extensions from GEO implemented by Tom 
Vijlbrief.

Functions for his types, like the one mentioned by you, are in the file 
GEOHOME/geo-ext/geo-ext.c.

I implemented also C functions in Postgres. I took me quite a long time 
before I found the reasons cause of them the backend crashed.

I am using postgres v4r2 and GEO v1.33
