setting PQerrormsg was more than a little hit-or-miss; it's been 
made a bit more consistent in our current code.

our next release [out of which i am still trying to shake one 
last mean multiuser bug that only manifests itself on sparcs >-( 
before turning the code over to marc] supports alpha osf/1.  in fact,
that's now more or less our main development platform..

greg kemnitz (kemnitz@multisys.com) did a port of 4.0.1 to NT and
posted a note to one of the NT groups about it.  i don't know if
he is giving out that code or not.
