You got to put the .o file into some directory /sys/MIPS/YOURMACHINE, I would
guess - though it's a while back I built Ultrix kernels (I'm doing
that now preferably for 386BSD kernels :-) and then run the script
/etc/doconfig.

When this is done 

mv /vmunix /vmunix.old

mv /sys/YOURMACHINE/vmunix /vmunix

(optionally three  -|- -|- -|- here :-)
                    |   |   |

/etc/reboot
