Subject: exiting from postgres backend?

Does anyone know how to cleanly exit from the postgres backend
when running the pastgres backend directly? I've tried 'q', 'quit',
'exit', and many other variations, but with no success. The only
thing that I find that works is to ^c the program, but this seems
so inelegant. Any suggestions?
